Should we be afraid of AI?

For example, according to a 2022 study published in Personality and Individual Differences, high school students are more likely to be cynical of AI when they perceive that it has an agenda or is hostile towards them.

Another area that requires close attention is how the use of AI could affect relationships. Kate Darling, for example, believes that despite the common belief that robots will destroy our relationships, they can actually enhance them. This is because they can take on back-breaking and boring jobs that would otherwise be impossible for humans to do, freeing up our time for more meaningful activities.

Cindy Cohn, a sustainability expert, believes that it’s crucial to make sure that all research data and AI technology is publicly available so that anyone can use it. She also argues that governments need to help push companies toward more sustainable technologies and encourage them with financial incentives.

Should we be afraid of AI’s impact on society?

However, it seems unlikely that a violent AI revolution will happen. Instead, an AI that is closer to key productive activities can extract what economists call “agency rents” by leveraging its superior intelligence.
